In the MIX
Yay to my new blog design!! Am loving it! No more excuses not to blog now! 🙂 Hopefully I’ll keep up with my goal of a once a fortnight posting, and hopefully you will continue on reading!
So last month, I got a chance to be a radio DJ for 2 whole weeks. And it wasn’t just any regular ‘sitting-in’ job, it was to fill in for the breakfast crew on Mix.fm who were on their 2 weeks break. The morning shows on radio gets the most listeners so it was pretty daunting to say the least for a first attempt. Vince Chong and I were paired together and we’ve only just met properly like a week before we went on air, while we’re training to use the panels and the software. And both of us are freshies to radio, I mean, we’ve been interviewed on radio before but never as the announcers. Even the station manager told us that this was the first time they took in 2 non-experienced DJs to take over a morning show and it was a risk on their part as well.
I had a bit of an upper hand because I talk for a living, but boy, I realised, to be a radio announcer, you definitely have to be able to multi-task even more than a TV Host! Being a radio DJ is like being a TV Host who has to work the cameras and the audio, while sourcing for interesting news and materials to share, at the same time, editing clips that you have to play on air!! Fortunately for us, Vince and I managed to find a comfortable groove where we worked on each other’s strengths and in the end managed to find that little bit of chemistry to make this ‘relationship’ work, albeit only for the 2 weeks.
To replace a regular segment that Rod and Sarimah had on the show, our station manager suggested that we do a segment of our own and we all agreed that we would do parodies because we figured since we had a singer/songwriter amongst us, why not. And I think, in the 2 weeks, we had the most fun coming up with these parodies. Since we were only on air for 10 days, we thought we’d do one everyday, since the most we’d have to do is 10 anyways. In the end, we managed to come up with 9 (didn’t do one for the first day we were on air) and I think they’re the funniest and best parodies out there!! It’s not available anywhere else at the moment, so to all my readers, you’re in for a treat because I’m going to put them all up right here!!
This was our first parody. In commemoration of Michael Jackson’s death anniversary and a real incident which happened to Vince! We called it ‘Don’t Drop it!’

We also wrote a song from the perspective of Thor, Vince’s cat who was recently was neutered to the melody of ‘Thrift Shop’ by Macklemore

My first ‘solo’ came when we found out that Nash, the final Malaysian contestant in the Apprentice Asia was fired. We played it for him when he came in for his post-show interview and he was totally honoured and even got Sazzy to record it all on her phone! 🙂

This parody of Pink and Nate Ruess’ ‘Just Give Me a Reason’ is one of my favourites and every time I hear this song on the radio, I can’t help but sing our version of ‘Just Give Me ME Time!’

Another one on relationships. The topic that day was whether or not it’s ok for you or your partner to look/stare at someone else when they’re with you. We named the song ‘Little Miss Inspector’.

This one was for all the metrosexuals out there. Â We were talking about whether men are becoming more vain as compared to women because I found out that Vince actually goes for eyebrow threading!! (Even I don’t do eyebrow threading!)

On one of the shows, we talked about how sometimes text messages are misconstrued because of abbreviations and how technology is definitely helping us to be lazier.

This was supposedly our ‘goodbye’ song based on the melody of Will Smith’s Fresh Prince of Bel Air since we were talking about TV shows from our past that we would like to see on screens again.

And this final one was our surprise/welcome back gift for Sarimah and Rod. They played it the Monday they came back to work after their 2 weeks break.

Hope you enjoyed all of them coz Vince and I and the rest of the team had so much fun writing it. The laughter ringing from our meeting room every morning is definitely from writing these silly lyrics!
Well, who knows, maybe you’ll hear this annoying voice on air again soon? 😉
Love, Bel
